About two months ago, I switched from Windows to Chrome OS, and I haven't missed Windows at all. The only thing that needed some adjustment was my audio setup. I have virtual channels for the system, music, chat, and games. These are then mapped to my Rodecaster Pro II. With Pipewire, this setup was not too difficult and works reliably. Gaming works perfectly fine. The only application I miss is ShareX for taking screenshots. I still use my old Windows PC for gaming with anti-cheat software via Moonlight and Sunshine, and it works perfectly.
I must say this is the biggest issue for me too. A upgrade path for the device (like framework provides for its laptops) is the biggest missing feature for me.
But is it worth it if we create more electronic waste because of it? I somewhat like the idea of the activation lock system, because it makes the devices unattractive for stealing it. On the other hand it creates more unnecessary waste (at least they way Apple implemented it).
A way to unlock them should be provided. Report the serial to apple, they try to inform the owner by mail and/or push and after a 30 days grace period it should be unlocked. Another benefit of such a system is that it might even help to locate stolen devices.
I can already locate my stolen device through find my.
If anything I want Apple to be even harder on this so that no used component could be put anywhere else and work. Ideally I would be able to remote detonate the battery to deter thieves, but there are sadly legal issues around this.
But if somebody were to steal my laptop I would have to buy a new one, which would cause more waste. The best thing to do therefore is to ensure that nobody steals laptops.
Thanks for the awesome DIY version of the air quality monitoring solution. Due to this nice guide I already built 3 of the basic sensors and I just purchased one pro to support your cause.
Google Drive/DropBox and OneDrive has continued costs for the hosting provider and for this reason a subscription makes complete sense.
IntelliJ IDEA can be bought as a perpetual license [1] and the subscription just gives you access to the latest version.
The increased acceleration would make sense if it was a one time payment but as a subscription its nonsense. Mercedes has no costs for it after they produced the car.
One thing that bugged me in this otherwise awesome talk, is that the setting with values normal, higher, and high
is called Quality, but the speaker keeps calling it Compression. This is very confusing, since quality degrades with increasing compression.
> The back triggers have excellent force feedback and in some games the vibrations tell you on what type of surface you're walking.
I did play Forza Horizon 4 on the PC with a Xbox Series X controller and it worked fine. But had bad experience if I tried to use an PlayStation 4 controller. Which controller did you use?
But for Forza Horizon 5 I do play it on a Xbox Series X and currently prefer it for two reason:
1.) Its just works without any major issues (a friend of mine has on the PC currently constant crashes)
2.) My PC hardware can run the game but not pretty well
One big benefit I see on the Xbox side is that you can play the games on your PC too. And I hope that "exlusives" die as its just annoying.
But in short if you just want to play games a console might be less friction compared to a PC. No need to fiddle with graphics settings and so on.
I had my server in SBG2 and sadly the backup failed since the end of january. Yep it is my mistake for not checking the backups. Now I lost about 1 month of data.
The only good thing is that my backup was offsite.
Does OVH offer automatic snapshots for VPS? I know Hetzner does it for 20% addidation of the cost of the server. If they do the next question would be if they are destroyed too?
With OVH the price can depending on the situation double your cost, if you've got a 3€ VPS and a 3€ backup configuration (as the price depends on size)
