Yes, they ruined my 16e. Picking up a $400 pixel today and slapping GrapheneOS on it because the duopoly of phone software is horrific. Bugs vs spyware.

Buy gold and silver. Seriously. If you do not see the precipice we are a top of I have nothing else to say. ever since the great recession the Fed has been propping up the economy with low interest rates and Quantitative Easing. There is no way out of this but for an even greater depression.

All these fake trump bucks and investment plans are not for the children, they are for the investors that need the money in the market as another way to prop it up. The whole thing with Dell giving this money to these kids? Bullsht. He gave it to himself and to other investors. Nothing but a new kind of stock buyback plan.

Get ready to see poverty, and get ready to help each other. We are living through the 1920's again and it is crazy very few see it.

get ready to help each other

This. This will make all the difference, everything else is secondary.

In today’s media/social-media hellscape, how does one even begin to build a community? Every front page is filled with negativity, divisiveness.

I used to think preppers are nutjobs. As I grow old now, it feels more like they have a point

Good question. First start as small as possible. You dont need to design a massive system and burnout is a real possibility... which leads to: find groups already set up around you. We have a local food pantry that also cooks for people. It's ok to test drive various groups until you find good fits. There are various ways. Im helping a group get their non-profit status atm. Not super visible or boots on the ground but needed/useful. Other groups just need people to help reach out on social media.

It's as much a state of mind as physical actions and good for you for starting to see the need and opportunities.

Doesn't feel so roaring.

Not for you…

Most of you would not even be close to guessing the top ten states with the highest skin cancer rates.

Utah Minnesota Vermont Arizona Iowa Idaho New Hampshire South Dakota Nebraska Kentucky

https://statecancerprofiles.cancer.gov/incidencerates/index....

Skin damage, and skin cancer, is not just about the sun. It is about genetics and nutrition as well.

It's not just about cancer. it's about aesthetics, how leathery you look.

I am someone who is sensitive to MSG and the new substitutes they put in food to replace it.

It is not "dangerous", and I think that is the problem with the messaging, but it does increase my anxiety, insomnia and fibromyalgia symptoms. And I also thing for most people it is fine, but it certainly does not work with my family's genetics. My mother had the same issue.

Many things in food now replace MSG. Any time you see a protein isolate, what they are isolating is the glutamate. Malted Barley Flour also contains high levels of glutamate and purines (like inosine) that work synergisticly with it to enhance flavor.

Glutamate is an excitatory neurotransmitter, and it makes your taste buds more "excited". My mouth tastes like metal whenever I have foods with glutamate. It is not pleasant for me at all.

Honestly, I do not care about all of this anymore. We do not need social media. We just don't. If you want to use it for business then yes, you should need to present an ID.

"Age verification laws are as ineffective", yes. But this is even true for buying alcohol, but we still have the laws because they help. The more kids are off social media the better.

"as they are dangerous", this is laughable.

The example: "16-year-old in Texas, for example, could get pregnant and be denied abortion access—as well as information online about obtaining an abortion through other means, and even parenting the children they’re forced to have."

Hey, abortions for 16 years olds are illegal in Texas as are nearly all abortions. Yeah, it is a dumb law, but it is the law. So you are advocating for a child to break the law putting them at even more of a risk! You may disagree with the law, but if that is the case, work to change it.

I had many queer friends growing up in the 80's. They all talked to each other in real life. They had real solidarity in both the gay and straight community. I mean Stonewall happened in real life, not online. Maybe the whole online thing is meant to curtail real action. We do not need online.

I agree the implementation is faulty.

But you know how I know most people do not care about "the harm'? Because I am homeless with a serious mental illness and no one cares. Is there one person here who will rent me a room in their huge house for $600 a month so I do not have to stress living in my van anymore?

> So you are advocating for a child to break the law putting them at even more of a risk!

untrue in the general case?

> We do not need online.

agreed; doesn't really change the present issues

It is not weird, it is greed and control.

My god, horrific. Does not everyone know everything online is a psyop now? I will tel you, they don't. No one studies things, no one takes the time. AI, social media, it all has to be protested, boycotted.

Now it seems war is coming from the US it could not be more true that at this moment.

How about a few prison terms for conspiracy to defraud? And not for small fry like the "CEO" of this company either. Why not, say, 10 years for Marc Andreesen, personally? And, no, no "disrupting" it with serve-your-time-as-a-service, either.

I hate that Marc Andreesen' arc went from Mosaic to supervillain.

It's easier to count billionaires who aren't supervillains.

p.s. this is not a great photo of Marc on his Wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Marc_Andreessen-9_(croppe...

The money just brings out their real persona.

He's eggmaxxing.

A farm boy from the tundra of rural Wisconsin. That’s how he starts every single interview.

Oh it’s a great photo, on the contrary. Captures his essence perfectly.

> He posted on HN.

The call is coming from inside the house.

No, we should not stop something that is inevitable. We should work with it to find ways that it fits into a productive society, such as anonymously verifying that you are a citizen so the cost of abuse is at least a felony.

Nothing makes this inevitable. People like you who want to do nothing about it makes it inevitable.

Why? Generic computation existing always means this will be possible. The cats out of the bag. You can’t regulate computation globally. You can only enforce it on the platform level.

I want to do plenty about it, I want to make the barrier to allow this shit online identity theft to make it too expensive to do.

This is moral failure.

> What I wish they would realize in the Mozilla C-Suite is that there is real appetite browsers that get out of people’s way and focus on productivity.

You cannot sell what cannot be seen. Business 101.

It can be seen though. Thats why I referred back to the Arc browser. People saw the real differences and it had fairly brisk adoption across a number of different type of folks, it didn't narrowly target technologists. Our designers, for example, at my last job, loved the heck out of it.

It was good enough for Atlassian to buy the whole company for a good chunk of cash too, if I recall correctly.

The abrupt ending of Arc's development has now left a hole in the market that Firefox could fill and gain marketshare.

You are a power user if you are using Arc. I know a few people who do not even really understand what a browser is.

Atlassian bought Arc to put AI in it by the way; "Welcoming The Browser Company to Atlassian Building the AI browser for knowledge workers"

https://www.atlassian.com/blog/announcements/atlassian-acqui...

Power user is not equivalent to technologists, though they overlap. Making inroads into power user marketshare would be at least a modest increase in Firefox marketshare, given how small their current share is.

Of course you can. People sell what they don't have all the time.

Your cars are computerized death traps? Advertise their reliability.

Your OS sends endless information back home to Apple? Advertise its privacy features.

Your AI hallucinates? Advertise how useful it is for summarizing data.

Sell what? What is Mozilla hoping to selling here? Firefox is free.

Their main revenue is sending search traffic to Google. I imagine a near-future source will be paid subscriptions to LLM products that integrate tightly with the browser.

Both of those require convincing people to use the browser, which is "selling" in the sense of persuasion even though there's no exchange of money at that point.

Sorry, you are all missing the point.

By "sell" I do not mena to make a profit, I mean, make it visible to the market.

If firefox did its job and got out of the way, who would notice Firefox? It is hard to sell something with no "bells and whistles". Do you think it is a mistake that Liquid Glass exists? No. LG is there so you notice you are on an iPhone which uses to just get out of the way but now is just in my way all the time.

Adding AI to Firefox is to make it visible in the market.

Your data, presumably.

I love your comment and I could not just upvote it because it is true with so many things. The technocracy/corpocracy is trying to sell you things that mnake you believe you can have power over everything, even your life. Anyone who "fails" at anything, it is all your fault. I have literally been told my mental illness, and my current homelessness, is my fault because I did not do the right thing. The power and control people think they have over their lives is a paper thin delusion.

Our shared powerlessness should bring us in communion with others, but the technocracy/corpocracy wants to rip that apart and make us dependent on them for profit.

Hoping housing happens—you deserve it.
