The CDC report and the article present both worst-case and best-case scenarios for Liberia and Sierra Leone. 1.4M is worst-case (no intervention) and "almost ended" is best-case ("If, by late December 2014, approximately 70% of patients were placed either in ETUs or home or in a community setting such that there is a reduced risk for disease transmission [...] then the epidemic in both countries would almost be ended by January 20, 2015").
"So after Yitang graduated, I told him the normal way of seeking
jobs. When I looked into his eyes, I found a disturbing soul, a burning
bush, an explorer who wanted to reach the north pole, a mountaineer who
determined to scale Mt. Everest, and a traveler who would brave thunders
and lightnings to reach his destination. Yitang never came back to me
requesting recommendation letters. Apparently, he did not seek a job. Even
to the date Yitang announced his monumental result I did not know what
was the best for him. Though I was sure of one thing, − he could not survive
the life of “tenure-track,” “tenure,” and “promotions”. It was not his type.
I regarded him as a free spirit, and I should let him fly."
Her name doesn't necessarily mean "bow", though. "Yumi" is a reading of many first names, like 裕美 (something like "full of beauty") or 由美, which are more common than 弓 (bow).
At Stanford, you don't declare your major until your 2nd or 3rd year, and can change it after declaring. Students declaring CS will have already taken a number of CS courses, including the fundamentals of CS.
They set the machine to play at 2-ply, i.e., it only looks two moves ahead. It's not so surprising even a good algorithm would lose in 15 moves at 2-ply.
The article mentions they also played at 5-ply and it lasted 27 and 30 moves against Kasparov, which is probably better than most casual players would do.
I do think this was a reasonable choice for the presentation because as I understand it, that's what Turing would have used when working it out with pencil and paper (and as they said, even that would take 15 minute between turns). 5-ply probably would have taken on the order of weeks or months to calculate the next move by hand.
The sources also mention better use of meeting time via an increase in shorter meetings and teleconferences.
