Shopify offers a great product and has been innovating in the eCommerce space for years. We think what they've done is very cool, but we also think there's a lot of room for improvement.
So far we've focused our efforts on building an intuitive way for anyone to create a high quality site. Our new eCommerce offering is the best of both worlds, mixing our easy drag & drop interface with the power of a fully-featured eCommerce platform. This is useful, for example, when dragging a video into your product description -- it all just works.

Funny story: We filmed the demo video outside our offices on Pacific Ave. To get a smooth tracking shot down the sidewalk, Richard (our Head of Customer Service) was filming Trish (Office Manager) from an Aeron chair being pulled backwards by David (CEO). We shot another scene a few feet away and turned to get the Aeron for another take and it was stolen! Total film budget was $25 for the music and $500 for the chair :-)
I believe the analogy is most appropriate when a company hasn't yet discovered a solid, profitable business model. When you're in the early, exploratory days of your business, spending cash on non-critical items is literally like spending equity because non-critical purchases (especially extravagant ones) cut down your runway and do not raise the valuation.
From what I've read, while Prop 25 removes the 2/3 majority requirement to pass the budget, it also removes the 2/3 majority requirement to raise taxes due to a "poison pill" provision in the language. This is bad news, as it gives democrats pretty much free reign. If you thought taxes were already high...
