Have we not had enough yet? I hate how this is acceptable. We are either free people or we are not. What's it gonna take for our criminal government to stop seeing us as the enemy?

And if he really truly honestly forgot his password...then what? You go to jail for your entire life because you can't recall a series of cryptic letters and numbers that will be used to convict you? This is no longer America. Innocent until PROVEN guilty is a lie.

Humanity can really benefit from this. I am waiting to see what becomes of this breakthrough.

Isn't the ISP/carrier ultimately responsible for mitigating these types of attacks? You rent a line and some IP addresses, not the garbage coming into their network.

I'd be interested to hear how Matthew Prince at Cloudflare would mitigate these NTP/SSDP amplification attacks.

While I agree they are a juicy target for nation states, without proof that claim rings hallow. Why would the NSA/Russians/Chinese want $6000 from Protonmail when all they'd have to do is use XKEYSCORE to filter out Protonmail users and hack computers to get the secret E-mail at layer 7. Shutting down the Protonmail doesn't help a nation state at all. They WANT to know who's sending/receiving encrypted E-mail. The second wave of the attack would be as simple as targeting the last few hops to protonmail. That's not rocket science. If extortion was the goal of a nation state, we'd all be broke.

This attack smells more of a sophisticated asshole blackhat haxor with some advanced tools and a knowledge of vulnerabilities in critical internet protocols.

While not a talk by Applebaum, this video is semi-related and showing OPSEC failures by CIA using cell technology: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bM0PmwOlifE

This is a good thing for the survival of the company. I worked at HP and let me tell you, from what I saw, HP was the most bloated company I have ever seen. The horrible work ethic by the full time employees wasn't the exception but more the rule. I saw jsut about every employee take half day lunch breaks, and they'd hire contractors to do their work. I found it so disgusting that I exited the company. The full time employees I saw did NOTHING all day. They were basically all 25 year career employees that sat around doing NO actual work and they could get away with it because their manager and their managers manager was doing the same thing. HP is a horribly run company. Just about everyone there at least in the division I worked at was dead weight just showing up to collect a huge paycheck.

No Jets but he will be sending a CIA hit squad for sure.

Google is evil. Screw them. I refuse to use Google or their services. Make the switch. They deindex a lot of sites they don't agree with. Not saying that is the case here but they've been known to do it.

Link backing up your claims?

Switch to what?

NOTHING. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Stupid question. You might want to consider that the government is breaking the law of the land and spying on citizens. That is unconstitutional.

Well, nothing in this world is entirely bad or good. I thought, if it all became public in a hundred years or so, we could gain insights into sociology and whatnot. Like psychohistory could actually exist because of this data. Also, it 'levels' the playing field quite a bit if the data is publicly accessible; the world is not only flat, but concave in that scenario.
