Linux & LibreOffice. At the end of the day I'm grateful to all people who work on open source and free software.

People mix common cold with flu all the time. If you have the flu you usually can't even go out of bed, even with medication.

I already made that choice. Have had 3-day weekends for more than 4 years now.

Sorry, but I find that hard to believe. Part certainly wasn't very basic.

Slab of aluminium milled to a flat triangular-ish shape about 10mm thick, then inside hollowed out to half depth and 8 counter-sunk holes non-tapped. Common issues: - item is not flat - nicks and dents on the edges - non uniform depth of the counter-sunk holes - holes in incorrect locations - unapproved changes to design - scratches - pores (poor material quality) - incomplete milling

Then parts have to be hard anodised and sand blasted.

- Sand blasting uneven - Sharp edges remaining - Streaks - Contamination - Exposed bare metal (it is only acceptable in the holes that could be used for hanging)

Companies also have virtually non existent QA. You can list them things that will cause rejection and they send it anyway.

One company told him after sending a batch that was complete carnage "We can give you $100 coupon for next order!" he insisted on rework. So they sent again, even worse.

A lot of hate and bashing of Firefox here. On my Linux machine (relatively modern desktop) there's no difference in speed between Chrome(Chromium) and Firefox. A lot of people talk about goodies and extensions. I get it, life is easier with some of those but I just don't care. I use it barebones with enhanced tracking protection and it works flawlessly. Don't see many ads, the ones I see are not intrusive.

In two decades of using it (yep) I never had an issue. I used it on Linux, MacOS and Windows and I don't remember any issues whatsoever.

Same here, although I've had a couple issues but I actually contacted the website operator and over time they fixed the issues (either that or firefox themselves fixed it). It never hurts to reach out to tech support and ask for firefox support!

Switch 2 is amazing.

This is simply not true. Did you walk any US, UK and other first-world countries factories? A lot of them have separate machinist shops with tens or hundreds of machinists who can make pretty much anything given materials and time. Even every other small factory has a machinist shop where all kinds of things are made including whole machines, parts, improvements for existing machines, etc. In my small town there are two small modern machinist shops that can make anything you want. Look around and see if there are any factories or small shops and ask if you can take a look. You would be amazed by locally made high tech you see and what can be done.

I'm not really sure when and where the "we've lost the ability to make things" came from?

I agree that other countries caught up though.

We haven't completely lost the ability to make things that make things and yes, there are machine shops in factories across the US. But how many of those machine shops have the equipment and expertise to completely produce the machines necessary to make a, for example, car, from carburetor to computer chips, without going outside the US. An increasingly large number of foundational products are being made in other countries and shipped here for assembly (and even that is being outsourced now).

Note: I should mention that I'm actually mostly OK with this - I don't have a huge issue with globalism. What I do have an issue with is people who claim this is a horrible, horrible situation while these same people are the ones who put us in this condition and continue to profit from it, without attempting to actually fix it, and expecting someone else to step up and fix it.

It's perfectly fine to ignore 99.999% of those. Whip out a script or an app that does exactly what you need without the bloat if viable.

I subscribe to many newsletters and get loads of offers. I pretty much ignore all of them. Most of those $10/month tools are just clones of something or not useful at all in the trenches so to speak.

Do you subscribe to any paid newsletters? If so, which? (If you don’t mind sharing)

I miss the era of "startx"!
