As impressive as this might seem let's think about fundamentals.

Statistical models will output a compressed mishmash of what they were trained on.

No matter how hard they try to cover that inherent basic reality, it is still there.

Not to mention the upkeep of training on new "creative" material on a regular basis and the never ending bugs due to non-determinism. Aside from contrived cases for looking up and synthesizing information (Search Engine 2.0).

The Tech Industry is over investing in this area exposing an inherent bias towards output rather than solving actual problems for humanity.

"And what I think makes ChromeOS really powerful is Crostini, a full Linux VM that you can run inside ChromeOS"....

This is akin to the person that uses their left hand to touch their right ear....

Both MacOS and Windows offer that without all constraints and privacy negligent services from Google/Alphabet.

There might be something more to it. There are a world of software engineers who have access to all that, including me, who find chromeos an excellent env to work on. I have a mac, google isn't spying on your when you write code in crostini and compile it.

Neither macOS nor Windows offers the deep Linux integration you get with Crostini (macOS doesn't run Linux apps, while WSL2 is good it doesn't offer the same integration as Crostini).

And modern version of Windows are much more of a privacy nightmare than ChromeOS, just take a look at the Windows Recall for example.

What is the mac version of WSL or Crostini?

As yes, Windows, the famously privacy respecting OS. [1] [2]

Apple has also been hard at work developing new ways to gatekeep users from running their own software. [3] macOS updates are also widely known to be small, quick to install, and never leave the computer unbootable. [4] /s

I, like the author, have had Chromebooks for many years. They are, bar none, the most easy to use and secure by default computer I have ever used.

Chromebooks are cheap and are supported for longer than any Windows/macOS release and the update process is utterly seamless and without issue.

It has all but removed IT support requests from my elderly relatives. The worst thing they can do is install a sketchy Chrome extension, but that's painless to remove compared to malware.

This looks interesting but 4.2k stars for a js app that shows readily available LLMs is fishy.....

I mean it's nothing ground breaking. I guess the AI bubble is real :)

Good stuff! As a c/c++ coder maintaining his game engine (for commercial and hobby purposes), this is always good to see!

That's not weird, that is just CNN.

It's ironic that they posted this story as they're a huge contributor to the polarization of American citizens.

For profit "news" media is just glorified gossiping channels.

I mean all the rainbow stuff is crippling our society from an objective perspective. If a war broke out, historically tried philosophies and objectively useful skills will take precedence. If you see how fragmented the younger generations are based on materialistic criterias you'd think it's a psyop operation to divide the nation up to the polarized state we're in. Almost nothing getting done with stalemates up the wazzouu.

Sorry to hear this. Same situation with 100lbs of extra weight -.- Cut out video games and I seem to be doing better. But have so many more things to tackle including my health.

I'd like to blame covid and the whole wfh crap which has made a lot of ppl colder than usual (at least that's my impression).

I'm still grateful for my beautiful family and having a job but man is it a struggle.

Hey! Same here! Moved teams in same company and I feel so alone it's crazy! Many engineers are introverted and/or already have relationships they've built before covid hit. No matter how hard a i try to connect through the chat window, in just don't get the same reciprocation as I get from face to face.

I've been coming to office to run into more ppl but alas, no one comes. So just as you, it's very lonely here and it's hard to get attached to work when you haven't met anyone face to face.

It's a sad state of affairs indeed. It is is annoying that tax companies will be taxed so aggressively.

There's a middle ground in a lot of things but it seems like Europe is becoming very antagonistic with aggressively taxing US tech companies.

US tech companies had about 10 years to properly pay their taxes, if anything, the US government should be happy it's happening so late.

The tax is a countermeasure for the loopholes tech companies use to avoid paying tax here.

I suggest fixing the loopholes.

Easier said than done.

Either by intentional design or by lack of resources, both EU and US govs have a hard time winning this game of whack-a-mole when these megacorps have armies of top lawyers and consultants who's sole focus is finding legal ways to avoid paying taxes.

That's kind of what has been done, they have now a turnover tax, which is much harder to avoid.

The EU has to come to terms with it. The EU consists of small countries each of which have a long tradition of being the safe house of dictators, black/drug/war/bribe/stolen money, shell companies, tax havens.

None of them want to give up these privileges, until now that is. Now that these are starting to have an impact at home, they have just started cleaning up.

Why would mutations ever stop? Also evolution is used ad nauseum it's annoying. Is cancer mutation evolution? Are hereditary sicknesses evolution?

Mutation seems more objective and neutral term here.
