Sounds like the old saying about the advertising industry: "I know half of my spending on advertising is wasted - I just don't know which half."

So funny to see this here, I was just looking into Ultima remakes last night, and saw this one among others. Looks really awesome. I never played any of the Ultima games back in the day, and have bounced off them when trying in later years. This should make Ultima VII a lot more accessible and playable.

There's also a remake of Ultima Underworld being made in Godot: https://github.com/hankmorgan/UnderworldGodot

Hoping for these projects to succeed, both U7 and UU sound like incredible games that deserve to be accessible to modern gamers.

The updated camera angle is the killer feature for me. That’s the only issue I have with the original and I had that same issue when it came out.

UU was teh shizz. I wonder what it would look like with photorealistic renders.

Not good, I imagine; IMO part of the magic of a game from the era is that blocky aesthetic. I'm reminded of how Dracula X Chronicles completely sucks all the joy out of Rondo of Blood with ugly 3D models and weird arrangements of the compositions with 'real' instruments (or just a different synth).

The only reason to play that version is the SotN unlock for the PSP and even then, easier to just download the PSX iso.

The PSP SotN was different enough than the NA PSX release, including a new Maria mode (different than the Saturn one), and a new translation (technically better, but retranslates some iconic lines).

Perhaps most notably, the "What is a man?" scene was completely retranslated

I guess if you have/had a PSP this isn't an option but they did release a collection for the PS4 called Requiem that has these changes packed in.

Ultima Underworld also came out before Doom!

You can play Arx Libertatis today with the assets bought from GOG (Arx Fatalis). The game is really close to UU.

I played them (starting with 4) back in the day. And 35 years later, I fixed a bug in the ScummVM version of U4. I discovered it while showing the game to my kid.

I couldn't have predicted that back then. Although as a kid, I did fix a "bug" in Ultima that required the floppy disk when you had it installed on HD.

> I always ask ChatGPT do directly cite and evaluate sources. And try to get it in the mindset of comparing and contrasting arguments for and against. And I find I must argue against its points to see how it reacts.

Same here. But it often produces broken or bogus links.

Al Jazeera reports around 750 US military bases, across the world but concentrated in Europe, Japan and South Korea, and the Middle East. Not quite bordering China. https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/9/10/infographic-us-mili...

This is not wrong but the term base is click baity but probably an accepted definition from the pentagon. It’s include all facilities no matter or large or small and even those that are part of another base but not on the main campus. It’s almost like a count of buildings.

I haven’t checked, but I would guess this number even includes things like NSA outposts (since NSA is part of DoD) and embassies (which are protected by Marines).

While that may be true, if I understand correctly the typical “base” number is effectively down to a structure. So if you have a radar station in Japan that has a handful of employees and they report up to one of the larger complexes, that counts as a base. It is conflating imo with what people picture as a base.

Generally, intelligence officers/employees (such as people who work at NSA) deploy to bases, or FOBs. I'm sure there are a handful of "NSA outposts" but this isn't generally how it works.

I’m thinking of things like Room 641A. Is that regarded as a base?

No.

This looks really cool! I'm curious to try it out and see how the .base files look like

Wow, why is the title tag of the page apparently a Windows file path?

Because someone copy pasted something somewhere.

I'm not a subscriber so I can't read it, which startup are they referring to in the headline?

They're referring to Crusoe (crusoe.ai)

A company that will surely still exist in 4 years time.

You've got the wrong link I think, that's showing data from 2020 to 2024.

There were two links, I just failed at proper formatting:

1985 to 2020: https://www.fns.usda.gov/yearly-trends

2021, 2022, 2023 & 2024: https://fns-prod.azureedge.us/sites/default/files/resource-f...

Nope, blank page here too. Or, it's actually going to the Firefox Home screen, I just turned off all the content in Settings > Home. I'm on 130, still a blank home screen.

This was such a great pitch for the book, I went ahead and ordered it!

With fantasy settings in particular it's crucial to keep the setting consistent, since the book is the only "source of truth" on the matter. This sounds like the way to go. Excited to check it out.

Wow, I was not expecting that, but thank you so much!
