I find the shortness of this message a bit strange.

How did you make a living so far? What was your plan and why did it go wrong?

What are your plans now?

What is your skillset?

"A bit strange" means many things. Do you think it's a suspect plea for help or do you not understand how this can happen to someone?

Let's assume it's a valid request for help. In which case there is only 2 days for tevlon to figure out what to do, and is currently feeling scared. This is not the right time to ask for an explanation of what lead to this point, because doing so doesn't help the immediate issue of food and housing.

Nor is it useful to ask "What are your plans now?", given that tevlon wrote "I have no idea what to do". There are no plans.

Nor does asking "What is your skillset?" help, because there's almost no answer which would resolve the immediate issue of food or housing.

People get into this sort of situation for many reasons. It could be bad planning, or being kicked out of the family which had supported you, or a consequence of depression, or a drug or gambling addition, to name only a few. Even good planning can't avoid all problems, because unlikely events also happen; a roommate who was paying part of the rent who then left or died, or a fire which required spending all the cash reserves to recover.

But someone who faces a crisis situation doesn't really have the focus or desire to educate others on the historical reasons which lead to the current crisis. If I hear someone cry out "Help, I've fallen down the side of the cliff!" my response isn't "Why didn't you bring a rope? Do you know how to make a ladder? What were your plans to keep from falling?"

Thanks for understanding. I had a (rich) girlfriend and she supported me, i am doing my master thesis and had no time for her, so she left for someone else and here i am :(

Is there anyone in your masters program that you can ask for help until you get back on your feet. I've been in a similar situation in the past, and never asked my colleagues for help because I didn't feel we were close enough. After the fact I found out that many of them were appalled that I hadn't asked them for help, and would have gladly done it. This was in the southern U.S. though, and I'm not very familiar with German culture; The culture difference may or may not make this as feasible.

Televisions might be a good addition. I might be biased, because I am in the market for a new TV. But It also fits into your concept of tech gadgets. And would be sortable nicely by screen size and price.

True. TVs are a good match for Product Chart. Got them on my ToDo list!

I have a Server in Germany. But my visitors are from all over the world. Will I have to pay to every ISP out there so my data gets to their customers quick?

No, since you will be forced to use transit to reach many of your visitors.

You don't even have the choice of direct connections to all of the world with just a single server in Germany.

There are reach products that will help you connect and peer to providers in remote IX's. You can peer with them directly, then have their traffic ride on your network all the way back. MPLS is a wonderful thing.

Yeah, you'll still need a lot of transit to reach people, but you can also peer with who you want.

He was asking about Hetzner, he has a single server and obviously doesn't operate the network.

Provided "who you want" wants to peer with you. Peering is a mutual relationship after all.

Most public peering IX's have route servers which have "most" of the routes available on the exchange. Peer with that and you have almost all of the routes available on the exchange. Of course, some entities might not advertise everything to the route server, but most do in my experience.

> Most public peering IX's have route servers which have "most" of the routes available on the exchange.

Doesn't matter when we are talking about DTAG, which is the dominant ISP and will not peer for free. Yeah, you can peer with a lot of smaller networks which is nice, but not enough.

Same applies for the US market where the big players refuse to peer.

Not sure what to think about the Kim Dotcom projects. They all seem to be short lived. What about that mega.co.nz thing he launched lately? I read that he sold it and distanced himself from the new owner already.

IMO he is more of a shady celebrity businessman than a hacker or innovator, mostly known for his flamboyance.

A megalomaniac with no talent, that use his mates work to shine. He changed his handle but he's still the same pathetic lamer he was ~3 decades ago.

Does he know how to write code? Did he actually write the first version of mega?

The question is, did he really write the first version of Kazaa?

Is it said to be him who wrote it?

Is the obligatory comment attacking his character on every thread about him really necessary? How about discussing the solution he is actually proposing?

It's relevant because everything he's done up till now isn't anything technically innovative, just mainly ways for him to make money and promote himself as some kind of Internet hero, which is is not. This project will be more of the same nonsense.

Did you read the article? He's not proposing a solution, beyond using the words "blockchain" and "encryption".

Does it even matter? The importance is the end product.

The company runs well and doesn't want his interference, he raised money from investors who conspired to wrest control from him. Kim accepted what happened and moved on. Mega.co.nz is alive and well, just not under his control.

Didn't he warn that Mega.co.nz can't be trusted anymore?

And his investments in Letsbuyit.com …

Thanks. Looks like there is broad consens for the 50% formula.

Recently my Debian 8 server started "being down" from time to time. It does not respond to http, ping and ssh. Nothing is in the logs. Just like the power has been turned off. Only when I reboot it, it comes back.

It's a dedicated server rented from 1and1.

While I try to find the problem or a new provider, I would like to get notified when it is down.

There must be an endless number of free services for this. Can my fellow startup buddies from HN recommend one?

Ok, let me make a start. This is what I use:

    Debian
    Apache
    MySql
    PHP
    VIM
    99designs
    Upwork
    GitHub
    webpagetest.org
    Google PagespeedInsights
    Google Analytics
