Not to nitpick, but I think it's mostly caused by refined carbohydrate consumption, high fructose corn syrup, smoking, and obesity.

In other words, the exact opposite of what your parent post said. And fyi HFCS is refined carbohydrate.

Right and it's vital for people to know this. For anyone who wants to know more I recommend starting with http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2003/03/2... Mercola is not an original researcher but he does substantiate his views ('Soda should almost be illegal to give to children. I can't think of any reason or justification to continue such a disease-promoting practice') with links to the many peer-reviewed publications.warning against its use. This sorry story of HFCS, obesity and ill-health is gathering momentum. . http://www.ajcn.org/cgi/content/abstract/79/4/537

Well, it's not as if eating lots of fatty (high calorie density) food doesn't also result in obesity.

I think that implicit in your expression of dissent to what I initially wrote is belief in the fallacy of "good fats".

You should read some of Weston Price's research: http://www.westonaprice.org/Ancient-Dietary-Wisdom-for-Tomor...
