Yes. Probably the most inspiring feature of my first number theory course was a healthy dose of history: about Gauss, Sophie Germain, Riemann, Hardy, Ramanujan. It was helpful, psychologically, to see the process that gave rise to number theory, instead of viewing its ideas as God-given.
