I get the joke (bobbies); in addition to the much cooler Bow Street Runners, they were actually known as Sir John's Men (or Sir John's Runners) after his brother - thankfully the obvious alternative equivalent derivative naming there doesn't appear to have caught on as it has another contemporary meaning in the UK.
