It all depends on what you plan to do. If you are learning data science for simple use cases then the guide in the blog post is fine. The suggested literature however is limited to undergraduate freshman level in terms of difficulty. To go beyond you will need an understanding of mathematical proofs and multivariable calculus.

You don't need proofs to learn techniques, beyond the proofs that are "simplifying expressions and balancing equations".
