Do Washing Machines Belong in Kitchens? Many Brits Say “Yes” (sapiens.org)

I wish it had been more common in existing US "detached" homes from the past century. We live in a city because of our kind of work, and we can't afford new housing- inevitably we buy or rent old homes. Laundry facilities are invariably located in basements. I broke my ankle four years ago carrying a laundry basket to one such basement. I still have difficulties walking up and down stairs.

I have seen my share of modern homes and condos- I don't think I have ever seen this configuration, even in new residences.

My wife and I are getting up there in years. I would be over the moon to find more US homes and condos with laundry fit into the kitchen somehow.

At least in SE Michigan, the trends seem to be in your direction. Buyers & renters have favored floor plans that do not invite the basement stairs to laundry day for ~4 decades now. And builders have mostly noticed that longer plumbing runs don't boost their bottom lines.

(Not saying that I've seen much laundry in the kitchen yet - just closely adjacent to it.)

They don't not belong in the kitchen.

For years, I've had a small washing unit that I use (Europeans and likely other non-US people will not find this odd), and while it lives in a closet between uses, when I need it it gets set up in the kitchen. Because that's where the most convenient access to an appropriate water faucet is.
