Cockroach solves the sharding issue by adopting consistent hashing-based data distribution, as described in the Dynamo paper. However, their cloud solution is a bit expensive to get started with.

Does CockroachdB already support ltree?

It doesn’t. It doesn’t support most of the Postgres extensions. We got away with it because we weren’t doing anything beyond vanilla Postgres.
