I think the point (related to community) is that the community made bitterness, cheap laughs at others' expense, etc. acceptable. Now the nutjobs are only two standard deviations from the mean, instead of four.
depends on how you define "acceptable". it's hard to publicly punish someone for bad behaviour on a blog but the wave of indignation shows that it's not accepted if someone crosses a line
