A Stanford Ph.D. turned taxi driver

Even if you had been successful for 16 years, it could still turn bad.

Not to mention Douglas Prasher (shuttle bus driver for a toyota dealership)

I'm a chem phd driving for lyft while I'm running my nonprofit science outfit. Some of my passengers have told me there are others out there.

This is not new:

"What did one New York City cabbie say to another? So, what did you get your PhD in?"

... was a well known joke when I was a grad student in the late 80's.

When I started in Physics, my sister was in music; my joke was "At least I'll know why the hamburgers flip"

Douglas Prasher now has a job in the Tsien Lab at UCSD

That's awesome -- this story comes up more than you'd think. I'm glad that Tsien did this, and without fanfare. Academics can also be a place where integrity shines, too.
